Summary

Gwendolyn Lee Hassan
I consider myself a "risk coach" more than anything else.  Earning trust and building the kind of relationships that enable me to guide colleagues to successfully identify and mitigate risk, is the most rewarding part of being a lawyer and compliance officer for me.
I wasn't a kid who grew up thinking I wanted to be a lawyer. I was always a bit of a language geek. Living in Spain as a high school exchange student created a lifelong love of exploring different countries, cultures and languages and I had every intent of pursuing a career in the hospitality industry.

Practicing law was actually the furthest thing from my mind until my mother's accident. She was tragically thrown from a golf cart that flipped and rolled down a steep embankment in the prime of her life. While she narrowly escaped death, my mother was brain damaged and disabled for the rest of her life. The accident was the result of multiple compliance failures and became the impetus for me to go to law school and work on compliance and regulatory matters. My work for large multinational companies enables me to combine my love of language and of exploring different cultures with this practice of compliance and regulatory law; a combination I find truly fulfilling.

I have built high-functioning teams and best practice legal and regulatory compliance strategies/programs for publicly listed multinational corporations for over two decades now. Most recently I built a global compliance function and program for the world's third largest manufacturer of capital equipment and second largest manufacturer of agricultural equipment. Recent corporate restructuring has given me the opportunity to find my next challenge!

Questions & Answers

What are your long-term goals?
My long-term goal is to serve on the Board of Directors for a public company providing legal, compliance, ESG and risk management expertise. My more immediate goal is to find my next opportunity!
What are you working on right now?
I am doing some project work for the SCCE right now helping them develop tools for their members including creating a new risk management workshop scheduled to launch in spring of 2022. I am also helping to develop and teach an ESG course for the Loyola University School of Law.
Favorite Music Genre
I am easily seduced by a good pop song and have an almost encyclopedic (and completely useless) knowledge of 80's song lyrics.
Describe your greatest accomplishment.
My greatest accomplishment so far are my two children. They are smart, kind, compassionate humans and the world is a better place because they are both in it!
Who are your main influences?
Professionally, I greatly admire female attorneys who have paved the way for others like the great Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Sandra Day O'Connor and Sonia Sotomayor. Personally, I am especially influenced by the writings of Thich Nhat Hanh and Paulo Coelho, among others.
Why did you choose your profession?
When I was in my early 20's, and my mother was roughly the same age I am now, she was involved in an accident that result in severe brain damage and left her disabled for the rest of her life. This tragedy was the direct result of multiple compliance and risk management failures and was, ultimately, my motivation for going to law school and choosing this profession.

Conference Season in Full Swing!

Conference season launched last week for me with a trip down to Austin, TX to speak at the Modern Governance Summit.  I was excited to speak on a panel with Michael Volkov which was then moderated by my friend and mentor, Ellen Hunt.  We had a great discussion about the role of compliance in creating a positive corporate culture and the role of the Board of Directors in fostering such a culture and supporting compliance.

This week, I'm off to San Francisco where I've been invited to speak...
